Inlays and Onlays

Repairing heavy tooth damage doesn't mean you have to become a “metal mouth”.

When a substantial amount of the tooth surface is damaged by decay, a regular filling procedure is probably not the best way to reconstruct your teeth and keep them looking natural. Inlays and Onlays are often the better option for larger surface restorations.

When is an Inlay or Onlay procedure usually recommended by a dentist?

Inlays and Onlays are often recommended for situations where more than a filling is needed but less than a crown will do.

What are Inlays & Onlays?

An Inlay is done when the tooth structure replaced is within the cusp tips of the tooth (it fits in the tooth). If the new structure extends over one or more tooth cusps, it is called an Onlay (it fits on the tooth, or teeth). They are created from a precise mould of your tooth from gold, porcelain or tooth coloured resin and are bonded exactly into place.

What are the benefits of Inlays and Onlays?
  • Healthier gums
  • Minimum healthy tooth reduction
  • Bonded in place
