Root Canal Procedure

When the nerve of the tooth becomes infected or the pulp becomes damaged, a root canal procedure should be performed to remove the infected nerve and pulp. Ignoring the problem can allow an infection to get worse, usually leading to pain. An abscess may form which can spread to surrounding bones and tissues, expanding problems beyond the original tooth.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

The most common sign that there is something wrong is pain. Pain when chewing, and prolonged pain after the tooth has been exposed to hot or cold are common symptoms. However, it is possible you may not have any pain and still have an infection. Here are some other signs:

  • A darkening, or grayish looking tooth.
  • Tenderness and / or swelling in the nearby gums.
  • A recurring pimple on the gums.

Sometimes there are no symptoms at all. This is why regular checkups are important. A dentist can tell if there are signs of damage or an infection even when there are no symptoms present.

IS A ROOT CANAL PROCEDURE PAINFUL?

A root canal has a reputation for being a painful procedure, but this is a myth. Decades ago this was the case, but today with modern technology and anesthetics a root canal is normally no more painful than getting a cavity filled. At Awake or Asleep we also offer a variety of sedation options that can make the procedure very comfortable for you.

ROOT CANAL TIME

Most root canals can be done in a single visit. More complicated cases such as teeth with multiple roots, curved roots, or infections could require more than one visit.

ROOT CANAL VS. EXTRACTION

Most people prefer a root canal over extraction because it allows them to save their natural teeth. Also, a root canal is usually a more economical solution. If you have your tooth extracted, you’ll probably want to have it replaced with an implant or denture to restore chewing function and avoid your teeth shifting, and these procedures are all more expensive than a root canal.

SEDATION

At Awake or Asleep we offer several sedation options to help ensure that you will be comfortable during this procedure, including:
